About YY

My journey into this field came from a place of curiosity – back in my schooling days, the topic of mental health had unfortunately been shrouded in mystery and taboo. Not much was taught about it, nor do I know how to care for my mental wellbeing. The only emphasis on wellbeing, would be on physical health. Growing up, I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs in life, but again, I never really knew how to make sense of it all. I’ve always thought that perhaps, I’m just “abnormal” – that is, until psychology came into my life. The everyday interactions, people and behaviours started making sense! I felt so relieved knowing my experiences were common, and that there are ways to seek help. Too often, I see the discourses in society labelling pain and struggles as “weaknesses” or “insanity”. Which is why, I particularly love this quote by a British psychiatrist, R.D. Laing – “insanity is a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world.” Perhaps, we are just sane beings, coping in an insane world; and there should be no shame in asking for help in this insane world. It takes ample courage, kindness and self-compassion to acknowledge our own struggles and to ask for some assistance in our journey in life.

Alternatively, I also view seeking therapy as a form of growth – and growth is often uncomfortable because awareness begins. However, awareness can also be a powerful tool for change, and this is a wonderful sign of new beginnings!
